Design Guide - Foreign Case Studies
Project Name: Yacon Park
Location: Tel Aviv, Israel
Design Purpose: Drip Irrigation, Desert Oasis, City Park
Area: 50 hectares
Completion: 1973
Awards: 1979 Israel's official Rokach Architecture Award

in foreign case analysis, I Reference is made to Yarkon Park in Tel Aviv, Israel's second largest city. The reason for choosing it is because in 2015 WHO/UNICEF’s “Progress in Health and Drinking Water – 2015 Update and Millennium Development Goals Assessment Report” stated that Israel’s improved water source ratio is as high as 100%. In addition, although the agricultural population is less than 5% of the total population, this Middle East country that uses drip irrigation technology to turn large deserts into oases not only solves its own food problems but also exports high-quality fruits, vegetables, flowers and cotton to other countries. In 1979, Yarkon Park won the Rokach Architecture Award, which was awarded by the Israeli authorities every four years. It can be seen that the water management of Yarkon Park has a unique reference value.

Yarkon  Park is a large park located in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv. The annual number of visitors is about 16 million. The name of the park is taken from the Yarkon River flowing through the park. Yarkon comes from the Hebrew word "Yarok", meaning green. In 1988, the Yarkon River Authority was established to revitalize the river and make it suitable for sailing, fishing, swimming and other recreational activities. Water quality improved after the construction of modern sewage treatment plants at Hod Hasharon and Ramat Hasharon. Dredging the river to restore its original depth and natural flow. The riverbank is elevated and reinforced, and hiking and cycling trails are built. Along the river, you can find green spaces and a variety of attractions, mainly sports related. There are also bicycle paths and runways.

When you come to Israel's national park, Yarkon Park, you can see people leisurely on the grass, in the shade of the trees, and the 50-hectare park area. The greening is completely unrecognizable. It is located in the Middle East. In countries that are short of water, but there are so many plants, all of them must be watered. Can this amount of water be consumed?

Israel National Park Administrator: "Now I am entering the central irrigation control system and connecting to all the park's installations." With the mobile phone, you can remotely control every watering switch in the park. All the park's watering devices are integrated and handed over to the centre. Unlimited computer management, which piece of grass in the park should give water, and which plants can use drip irrigation to supply water, all through computer precision calculation. Yakir Zukerman, Business Manager, Israel Water Management: “This watering system saves water and energy, saves water and energy, and basically saves water for local governments.”

In addition, watering equipment in each area of the park, The installed automatic meter reading system can monitor the return water flow at any time. Israel National Park Administrator: "The automatic meter reader is very important because if the pipeline is broken, I can immediately know the control. This pipeline is broken and leaks. I will turn off the watering switch." In contrast, this smart water-saving management system alone saves nearly 50% of the park's water and energy.
